Microsoft decided early on to totally replace DOS with Windows. However, when it did so it omitted a major feature of other operating systems--a scripting language, also know as a batch file language, that lets users automate processes by creating a text file of commands that will be handled by the command processor as if the user were typing in the commands manually. For legacy purposes Windows still includes CMD.EXE, a basic command-line processor. However, even the latest Windows version doesn't come anywhere near the command processors of other operating systems, such as Unix/Linux "shells".
Even when DOS was still popular JP Software put out a supercharged command processor called 4DOS. Norton Utilities licensed 4DOS and included it with Norton Utilities for DOS as NDOS. The latest version of the processor is called 4NT and a free fully-functional trial version is available. If you bothered to come to this page and you know how to do programming try it out--you'll be glad you did!
Basically, 4NT provides a command processor about as powerful as a Unix shell! It's great for all those "little" utilities geeks write where you don't want to get into major things like interface design, etc.
